I have the unfortunate duty of dealing with Government Data Center based operations every day, and of contributing to lots of Federal, "Hmmm," sessions after Cloud vendors come in to pitch wares.
ReplyDeleteAfter lots of consideration, I've come to view transition to cloud based operations as being a net difference of 'meh'. The government ones are generally run by large and horrible contractors too entrenched to dislodge, and modernization efforts (inlcuding things like basic COOP to alternate sites) are rare and ineffective.
Private 'Cloud' sellers might actually be an overall improvement, if the infrastructure has to live up to the same standards that satisfy private sector clients. They aren't as likely to put up with the same horrible service that government does, which means Gov clients would be forced to have more availability and security response.
I would be surprised if Cloud based operations resulted in less security or availability than the existing solutions, if only because it's such a low bar to get under.
